LAGOS, Nigeria – Officials of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested the police officer captured on video assaulting a young lawyer, Mr. Olakunle Kareem who was allegedly demanding salary from his employer.
According to statement posted online by RRS, the video posted online by OAKTVOnline came to the attention of the Commissioner of Police Lagos State, Mr. Edgal Imohimi who constituted an investigative team on the matter. The RRS said he was arrested for unprofessional conduct.
“The police officers captured on video assaulting a young lawyer said to be demanding his salary and posted on the Instagram have been arrested for unprofessional conduct. The video was posted by OAKTVOnline with the caption “SARS officers assault young lawyer allegedly demanding for his salary in Lagos”, RRS said on tweeter, adding “the Commissioner of Police saw and constituted an investigative panel to study the video. Findings revealed that the officers were not SARS” but conventional police attached to Lion Building Police Station who were invited to the Chambers of Olawore & Co of No 28/30 Macarty Street, Lagos Island by the Managing Partner, Barrister Oluyomi Olawore.
“It was gathered that Olawore sent a distress call to the DPO. Lion Building through one of his junior partners, requesting that he be rescued from a junior partner by name Bar. Olakunle Kareem whom he alleged was about to use an unlawful force on him having disconnected the Firms’ CCTV cameras and held him hostage”, the RRS said in a statement.
The RRS said the police officers sent to bring the feuding partners to the station for interrogation by the DPO were not professional in their conduct. “The CP has ordered that the arrested policemen be tried on oath. They risk stiff punishments for their actions. He also directed that Divisional Police Officer in charge of Lion Building be queried for lack of supervision, while the DCP SCIID, Panti, Yaba investigate the case of the two lawyers with the view to diligently prosecute both or anyone of them found wanting”, the statement said.
