Police Arrests National Mirror Journalists for Photographing CBN Building on Fire

Policemen from the Lions Building, Lagos on Tuesday arrested a photo-journalist from National Mirror newspapers, Mr. Yinka Adeparusi for daring to take photographs of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) building at Broad Street, Lagos that was up in flames.

We gathered that the policemen were infuriated when they saw that the journalist in company of his colleague was photographing the incident, pounced on them and destroyed one of the cameras before arresting them.

The source of the fire incident which took place at about 5:30 PM is not known.But we gathered that the incident occurred in the old building as workers were preparing to move documents and other sensitive items from the old block into the new building.

Public Relations Officer, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye confirmed the incident, stressing that men of the fire service were just getting to the scene of the incident to put off the fire. He later said that the fire was already under control.

Also speaking on the incident, Head of Fire Lagos State, Engineer Rasaq Fadipe said his men mobilised firemen from Sulere and other areas to the scene adding that one of his men was exhausted by the enormity of the task and collapsed while fighting the fire. He added that the fire started from the third floor of the buildng.

We gathered that the incident threw the whole area into confusion and engendered heavy human and vehicular traffic.
