IKEJA, Lagos – The Nigeria Police Force has arrested eight suspects in connection with the killing of a police officer, Sergeant Collins Esiabor and vandalisation of police patrol van at Haruna, Ifako-Ijaiye, Ogba.
Addressing journalists in Lagos, Commissioner of Police, Mr. Edgal Imohimi said on 29/08/2018, at Haruna Bus Stop, Ifako-Ijaiye, Ogba, a mob, for no good reason and without any provocation whatsoever, attacked a police patrol team and vandalized a patrol van, stationed to provide security in the area, leading to the death of Sgt. Collins Esiabor.
“I promised then, that the Command will do all it can to unravel and prosecute those behind the dastardly act”, he said, adding that investigation launched into the incident led to the arrest of key actors in the crime.
Those arrested are Adewunmi Suleiman ‘m’ 28 years; Olorunda Michael ‘m’ 21 years; Omoba Idowu ‘m’ 27 years;Olarewaju Hammed ‘m’ 20 years;
Ransom Adewuye ‘m’ 27 years; Ayo Adeyanju ‘m’ 27 years;Anu Akinola ‘f’ 24 years; Ige Paul Akanbi ‘m’ 29 years; Babatunde Rufai ‘m’ 82 years; and Ariyo Elegbede ‘m’ 52 years.
According to him, investigation into the case revealed that the suspects are cultists as attested to by one of them, Ayo Adeyanju who conveyed the corpse of their late member to the burial site.
“On their way, they decided to avenge the death of the deceased on the police patrol team even though it is clear that the police had no physical contact whatsoever with the deceased.
The CP said the man who was killed that led to attack on the police sighted policemen within his vicinity and attempted to scale a fence believing they were after him.
“Unfortunately, he put the wrong foot forward and fatally injured himself”, he said. He explained that two native doctors (babalawo), Babatunde Rufai and Ariyo Elegbede, mentioned as accomplices to the group were also arrested with one dane gun and assorted charms.
