PLATEAU, Nigeria – Not less than 100 people were killed and several buildings torched when gunmen unleashed terror on 25 communities in Plateau State.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang who made the revelation on Arise TV said there were distress calls from at least 30 communities.
He said the gunmen struck on Christmas eve as Christians were preparing to celebrate, stressing that the attack has nothing to do with hearders and farmers clash but purely an act of criminality that needed to be dealt with.
He called for declaration of the gunmen as terrorists to give the government free hand to deal with the situation.
He said most of the affected people were killed in Bokus and that government has buried 15 people in one community alone.
The governor who did not give exact figures of the buildings torched, said the attack was still ongoing at 10 p.m. on Monday.
He said that though the response of the military was slow it succeeded in making it impossible for the gunmen to achieve 20 percent of their targets.
He said government has made provisions to comfort the victims, while it awaits response from the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA.
