LAGOS, Nigeria – A 61-year-old teacher, trusted to protect and educate young children, has been sent to prison for 14 years after sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl.
Igwe Ngozi, a teacher at a primary school in Lagos, Nigeria, pleaded guilty to attempted sexual assault by penetration after a brave little girl told her mum about the abuse.
The court heard that the girl’s mother became suspicious after her daughter’s pants were found messy and she complained of stomach pains. The frightened girl later revealed that her teacher had been inserting his finger into her.
The shocking incident came to light after the brave young victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, confided in her mother, who immediately alerted the authorities.
Ngozi was initially charged with sexual assault by penetration, which carries a life sentence, but later accepted a plea bargain for the lesser charge of attempted sexual assault.
During the trial, the judge, Justice Rahman Oshodi, said, “As a class teacher, he was supposed to protect the child but unfortunately abused a seven-year-old child.”
He added that Ngozi had caused “physiological trauma” to the victim.
The judge also ordered that the vile teacher be registered as a sex offender. He will serve his time in the place where he has been held since his initial arrest in February 2019.
