 LAGOS, Nigeria – The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has appointed a new chairman to replace Iyorcha Ayu, following the ruling of a Benue State High Court restraining Ayu from parading himself as national chairman of the party.

 The PDP said  Deputy National Chairman, North,  Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagun has stepped into Ayu’s position as national chairman.

 Damagun will however operate in acting capacity pending determination of the case.  He was appointed by the National Working Committee at an emergency meeting in Abuja.

“After a careful consideration of the court order and in line with section 45, subsection 2 of the PDP as amended in 2017, the NWC resolved that the Deputy National Chairman, North, Ambassador IIliya Umar Damagun will assumed National Chairman of the Party in acting Capacity”, the party said.

It called on members of the party to remain calm.

The Benue High Court restrained Ayu less than 24 hours after he was suspended by his ward for alleged antiparty activity,  refusal to pay his party dues and poor performance of the party in the February 25, 2023 Presidential election.
