THE stunning West African nation of Togo has pulled off a historic first by scrapping visa requirements for every single African citizen.

In a blockbuster move aimed at turning the country into a booming hub for travel and trade, anyone holding a valid passport from an African nation can now rock up to the border and get up to 30 days of visa-free entry.

Government officials hailed the massive shake-up as a “historic step forward” for the continent.

A spokesperson confirmed the country’s President of the Council is determined to transform Togo into a land of “openness, mobility, and opportunity.”

But there is still a tiny bit of admin for jet-setters to sort out before they pack their bags.

Under the strict new rules, travellers must register their trip online at the official voyage.gouv.tg portal at least 24 hours before they arrive to secure an official travel pass.

The dramatic policy leap cements Togo’s reputation as a trailblazer for African unity, effectively creating an open-door policy for over 1.4 billion people across the continent.

For Sun readers wondering about the destination making global headlines, here is the lowdown on the West African powerhouse:
Where is it? Togo is a tropical, thin strip of land nestled in West Africa, bordered by Ghana to the west, Benin to the east, and Burkina Faso to the north.

The Vibe: Its capital, Lomé, is famous for its golden sandy Atlantic beaches, vibrant palm-lined boulevard, and world-renowned traditional markets.

Why now? Africa has traditionally been one of the most difficult continents to travel across, with strict visa rules often making it harder for Africans to visit neighbouring countries than it is for European or British tourists.

Togo is trying to smash those barriers down to supercharge its economy and tourism sector.
