LONDON – At least 300 people protesting against the ban on Palestinian Action and calling for an end to ongoing genocide in Gaza have been arrested in London.
The London Metropolitan Police made the announcement on X, saying that they were arrested for protesting ain support of proscribed terrorist organization, Palestine Action.
“The police operation is continuing and we will provide further update”, the police said.
The police had issued a statement, warning protesters to stay within permitted areas.
The UK government proscribed Palestine Action under terrorism legislation for what it considers “a series of violent attacks against national security targets.”
This decision followed a specific incident in which group members allegedly broke into a Royal Air Force base, causing an estimated £7 million in damage to two jets.
The government argues that the group’s actions, which have caused millions of pounds in damage to property, including to the premises of Israeli arms company Elbit, constitute terrorism under UK law, which defines “serious damage to property” as a form of terrorism if carried out for a political or ideological cause.
The proscription means that membership or support for Palestine Action is a criminal offense punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
Human rights groups and legal experts have criticized the ban, arguing that it is a disproportionate response that risks a “chilling effect” on free expression and peaceful protest.
The legal status of the ban is currently being challenged in court.
