ONITSHA, Anambra, Nigeria – An over speeding truck has crushed a pedestrian to death in Ihiala local government area of Anambra state on the boxing day.
Any eyes witness said the driver of the IVECO Truck identified one Mr Chika Emmanuel Nwagu with registration number EPE 39 XT lost control and knocked down the pedestrian crossing the road near Ihiala local government head quarters of the state.
“The crash was as a result of speeding and lost of control” eyes witness said. Confirming the accident, the Spokesman for Anambra State Federal Roads Safety Corps FRSC, Florence Edor said three male adults were on board the truck.
“The driver of the IVECO Truck was later arrested by the military and handed over to the police after a timely tip-off by FRSC Rescue team from Ihiala command. The affected pedestrian was taken to Our Lady’s of Lourdes hospital by FRSC rescue team from Ihiala Command, and was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. The body has been deposited at the mortuary” he said.
According to her,the Sector Commander Corps Commander Andrew Kumapayi has condoled with the deceased family. He said Kumapayi has also urged motorist to avoid speeding in built up areas, saying that the maximum speed limit in an urban area remains 50km/hour.
“It is advisable to use less speed or common sense speed while in a build up areas in order to ensure safety on the road users.Speed thrills but kills.Drive safe,stay safe” he said.
