ABUJA, Nigeria – The senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was today elected Deputy President of the Senate. He was elected few minutes after Senator Ahmed Lawan was elected President of the Senate.
Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was rewarded by his party, the All Progressive Congress(APC) for invading the Senate chambers with thugs which snatched away the Mace, symbol of authority of the red chamber.
Senator Ovie Omo-Agege today defeated former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu in what was supposed to be a secret ballot but in which the electorates vote and show the content of the ballot to APC chieftains, including governors who had stormed the Senate in an election that was supposed to be a Senate affairs. Omo-Agege scored 68 votes to defeat Ekweremadu who scored 37 votes
Omo- Agege who was very elated about the votes wrote, “Hail My Jesus” on the social media.

Shortly after snatching the mace in April 2018, spokesperson of the Senate, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, described the action as an attempt to overthrow an arm of government, describing it as treason.
“Today, some hoodlums led by suspended Senator, Ovie Omo-Agege, walked into the Senate plenary and seized the symbol of authority of the Upper Legislative Chamber, the mace.
“This action is an act of treason, as it is an attempt to overthrow a branch of the Federal Government of Nigeria by force, and it must be treated as such.
“All security agencies must stand on the side of due process and immediately mobilize their personnel to retrieve the mace and apprehend the mastermind and the perpetrators of this act”, he said in a statement.
