KEBBI, Nigeria – Not less than 100 persons aboard a passenger boat have disappeared in Kebbi State. They were reported missing after a boat conveying about 180 passengers capsized at Corner Libata in Ingaski Local Government, Kebbi State.
The boat, we gathered capsized just 30 minutes after departure from Loko in Minna, Niger State. We gathered that the victims were mainly traders who were heading to a market in Kebbi State.
Kebbi State Governor, Mr. Abubakar Bello has sympathized with families of the deceased, adding that the boat mishap is unfortunate.
Sources say search and rescue operations are still ongoing. So far, about 20 persons have been rescued alive and some dead bodies recovered from the river.
Speaking on the development, Director-General, Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency, Ahmed Inga told Channels Television via telephone that local swimmers had been employed to carry out rescue missions in the area where the boat upturned.
