October 21, 2014 – Twenty-seven year old South African amputee sprinter, Oscar Pistorius was Tuesday sentenced to five years jail term for killing his girlfriend, Miss Reeva Steenkamp, a 29 year old model, TV star and law graduate.
He will also serve three year suspended sentence for unlawful possession of fire arm. Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide but cleared of murder by Judge Thokozile Masipa.
Pistorius is expected to serve about 10 to 24 months in prison and the rest under house arrest as opinion vary on how long he would be in prison.
While the defence lawyer, said Pistorius is expected to serve 10 years in prison and the rest under house arrest, Dup De Bruyn, a lawyer said Pistorius would probably serve two years.
Prosecutors had called for a minimum 10-year term while the defence team had argued for community service and house arrest.
The parents of Reeva Steenkamp told the BBC they were happy with the sentence and relieved the case was over, while Steenkamp family believed justice has been served.
