Hungary Boss Claims EU Membership Will ‘Drag Us Into War
By SCM Reporter
HUNGARIAN firebrand Viktor Orban has stuck the boot into Ukraine’s EU dreams, sensationally claiming that letting the war-torn nation join the bloc would “ruin” the economy and plunge Europe into a direct conflict with Russia.
The defiant Prime Minister told supporters that the Hungarian people have spoken “clearly” and will not accept Kyiv’s bid for membership at any cost.
In a blistering attack on Volodymyr Zelensky’s government, Orban accused Ukrainian leaders of meddling in domestic politics to get their hands on EU cash.
“Ukrainians obviously want a government which will send them money,” Orban declared, suggesting that Kyiv had actively tried to influence Hungary’s recent elections to install a more sympathetic regime.
“Therefore, they decided to participate in our presidential campaign,” he added, sparking a fresh diplomatic row between Budapest and Kyiv.
Orban warned that the cost of integrating Ukraine—a country currently battling a full-scale invasion—would be a “death sentence” for the European economy.
He argued:
War Risk: Ukraine’s entry would automatically drag NATO and EU members into a frontline confrontation.
Financial Ruin: The sheer scale of reconstruction costs would drain the pockets of every European taxpayer.
Agricultural Collapse: Cheap Ukrainian grain would flood the markets, destroying local farmers.
The Prime Minister’s comments come as a massive blow to EU bosses in Brussels, who have been trying to fast-track Ukraine’s path to membership as a show of solidarity against Vladimir Putin.
Background: The Budapest-Kyiv Cold War
This isn’t just a war of words; it’s a deep-seated grudge. Hungary has consistently been the “black sheep” of the EU regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
The Veto Power: Hungary has repeatedly used its veto to stall billions of euros in military aid and sanctions against Russia.
Energy Ties: Unlike most of Europe, Orban has maintained close energy ties with the Kremlin, arguing that Hungary cannot survive without Russian gas.
The Minority Issue: Budapest also claims that the Hungarian ethnic minority in Western Ukraine is being mistreated by Kyiv’s language laws.
While the rest of the West stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Zelensky, Orban is making it clear: as long as he’s in charge, the door to the EU remains firmly bolted.
