JEDDAH – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has issued a strong statement welcoming the newly announced Gaza ceasefire agreement, describing it as a vital step toward a “permanent and comprehensive cessation of the Israeli aggression.”
In a statement released today, the OIC commended the truce for paving the way for several critical next steps. These include:
Enabling the return of displaced persons to their homes.
The withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces.
The unhindered and adequate delivery of humanitarian assistance.
Commencing the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.
The pan-Islamic body also extended its appreciation to “all mediators brokering this agreement” for their persistent efforts.
Looking beyond the immediate truce, the OIC stressed the need to “continue these efforts to eventually achieve justice and peace.”
This, the organisation stated, must be realised through the ending of the Israeli occupation and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
This ultimate goal, the statement affirmed, must be in accordance with the relevant resolutions of international legitimacy, the Arab Peace Initiative, and the New York Declaration and its annexes, which stemmed from the International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution.
The OIC’s firm stance underscores the widely shared view among its 57 member states that the ceasefire, while welcomed, must serve as a foundation for a lasting political solution that addresses the root causes of the conflict.
