She was granted a refugee status as a result of death threats even after her death sentence was overturned. Mariam was sentenced for marrying a Christian, Daniel Wani instead of a fellow Muslim which is considered a taboo in Sudan.
Wani said on Friday that Mariam Ibrahim and his two children were doing well at the heavily guarded US embassy. She had spent weeks on death row and later charged with forgery while leaving the country on a South Sudan travel document.
The US state department said Ibrahim and her family were in a safe location and that Sudan’s government “has assured the family of continued safety”.
