LAGOS, Nigeria – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has thrown its weight behind the ban on open grazing governors in Southern Nigeria.

NUJ made its position known in a communiqué following the May congress held on Saturday in Lagos. The union called on the governors to back their words with legislation by enacting laws that prohibits open grazing, the way it was done by the Benue State Government.

The NUJ  called on both the Federal and State Governments must take concrete steps towards tackling the prevalent security challenges across the country in order to ensure safety of lives and propert

The union called on the Federal Government must uphold the freedom of the press as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended), as the media is a strong tool in any democratic setting.

Other resolution include: “That government at all levels must grant the Press unfettered access to information so that journalists can disseminate information freely without any form of intimidation; that both the government and public must support the Nigeria Police in discharging its duties effectively in tackling kidnapping, banditry and other vices in the country”, the NUJ said.
