ABUJA, Nigeria — The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) announced on Monday the immediate resumption of its controversial policy enforcing the use of official permits for tinted vehicle glass, a move officials state is necessary to curb a worrying surge in violent crime across the country.

The enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy, which had been suspended to allow motorists time to regularize their documentation, will fully restart on January 2, 2026.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the decision follows a “careful review of emerging security concerns” and a “disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorized tinted glass.”

Criminal elements, including organized groups, have reportedly been exploiting the suspension to conceal their identities while facilitating crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and other violent acts.

”Some individuals and organized criminal groups have exploited this gap to conceal their identities and facilitate crimes,”

Hundeyin said in a statement released from Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The NPF had initially suspended the enforcement to demonstrate “responsibility, transparency, and public convenience,” and to ensure no undue pressure was placed on motorists seeking registration.

The Police emphasized that, contrary to some public perception, no court had actually restrained the Force from enforcing the provisions of the law regarding tinted glass use.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, assured the public that the renewed enforcement will be executed with “utmost professionalism, respect for the rights of citizens, and in accordance with extant laws.”

He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to public safety and upholding the rule of law.

Tinted glass permits have long been a source of public friction in Nigeria, often leading to increased stops and scrutiny for vehicle owners. Critics have previously expressed concerns over the potential for the policy to be abused by officers for harassment or extortion.

Despite these concerns, authorities are pushing forward, framing the resumption as a vital, proactive measure. Motorists who require the permit are strongly encouraged to apply through approved channels and ensure their vehicles comply with all legal procedures before the January deadline.
