AWKA, Anambra – Anambra State-born human rights lawyer and lead counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has commended Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot, for his extraordinary courage and decisive actions that helped save the lives of passengers aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073.
Machchhar, the captain of the Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight, was seriously injured during an alleged violent attack by his co-pilot on September 30, 2026, but managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and other crew members to intervene and restrain the attacker.
Two other pilots who were on board subsequently helped regain control of the aircraft, which was diverted and landed safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.
Ejiofor gave the commendation in his latest “Weekend Musings,” titled: “When God Defied the Shadow of Death: The Miraculous Survival of 174 Souls and the Heroic Courage of a Wounded Pilot.”
The lawyer centred his reflection on Machchhar’s reported determination to prevent the loss of lives despite sustaining serious injuries during the cockpit attack.
Machchhar later told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a video call from his hospital bed that he realised he had to get back on his feet because the passengers could lose their lives if he failed to act. He also said he was fighting for his own life while trying to save those aboard the aircraft.
According to Ejiofor, the incident demonstrated extraordinary courage, selflessness, and the enduring value of human life.
He wrote: “On 30 September 2026, the world witnessed a terrifying mid-air ordeal aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, Israel, with 174 passengers on board. What began as an ordinary international journey suddenly descended into a nightmare when the co-pilot launched a violent attack on the captain, stabbing him and sending the aircraft into a dangerous plunge.
“In the face of unimaginable pain, severe injuries, and the looming prospect of death, Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national with 17 years of flying experience, displayed extraordinary courage. Bleeding and gravely wounded, he summoned the strength to unlock the cockpit door, enabling passengers to intervene, overpower the assailant, and prevent a possible catastrophe.
“Two off-duty pilots on board subsequently helped regain control of the aircraft, which made an emergency landing at Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. All passengers survived.”
Reports on the incident confirmed that the aircraft experienced a dramatic loss of altitude during the confrontation, prompting an emergency response before it was diverted to Saudi Arabia. The captain’s action in opening the cockpit door enabled passengers and crew members to intervene while the aircraft was in serious danger.
Ejiofor further described Machchhar’s reported words—that he could not let the other passengers die—as a powerful expression of selflessness.
He said the captain’s courage, together with the intervention of passengers and other crew members, transformed what could have been a major aviation disaster into a story of survival, human solidarity, and resilience.
Ejiofor stated: “For us who believe in the abiding sovereignty of the Almighty, this extraordinary survival is a compelling reminder that, even in humanity’s darkest moments, God’s mercies can manifest in ways beyond human comprehension.
“At a time when Israel continues to remember the horrific attacks of 7 October 2023, this incident carries a deeply moving significance for those who see divine providence in the preservation of innocent lives.
“The precise motive behind the co-pilot’s actions remains under investigation and should not be prejudged.”
The circumstances and motive surrounding the cockpit confrontation remain under investigation, while the co-pilot has been detained following the incident. Authorities have not established a definitive motive publicly.
Ejiofor prayed for the recovery of the injured captain and for the emotional healing of those affected by the incident.
He added: “May the Almighty God, the God of Israel, grant Captain Smit Machchhar complete healing, restore his strength, and bless him with many more years of purposeful service.
“May He also comfort all those traumatised by this harrowing experience and preserve humanity from such preventable tragedies.”
The human rights lawyer also used the incident to call for stronger aviation safety measures, particularly in relation to the screening, monitoring, and emergency preparedness of flight personnel.
According to him, the incident underscored the need for strengthened psychological and security screening of flight personnel, continuous monitoring of potential threats, robust cockpit-access safeguards, effective emergency-response protocols, and regular crew training for violent in-flight emergencies.
He urged aviation authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident and introduce any additional safeguards considered necessary to prevent a recurrence.
Ejiofor said: “Indeed, every life is sacred, and no journey should become a death sentence through a preventable security failure.
“To God Almighty alone be all the glory, honour, and adoration.”
