Nigeria Woos Movie Makers from Trinidad and Tobago

September 5, 2014 – Nigeria has indicated interest in promoting active and credible linkages with Trinidad and Tobago in the movie sector.

It has therefore asked movie makers and authorities in the Caribbean Island to avail themselves of enormous opportunities the Nigerian movie industry offers.
Director General National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) Ms. Patricia Bala gave this indication in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago’s capital, during that the annual Emancipation Celebration.

Addressing the 14th Annual Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Symposium Bala noted that the NFVCB has its eyes on a win – win partnership with credible interests in Trinidad and Tobago to deepen bond and nurture the gains of cherished emancipation and self determination without loosing grip on the equally vital need to be relevant players within the global scene.

This development is coming on the heels of the rapidly expanding Nigerian movie industry which has raked in over N1.2 trillion of Nigeria’s income, according to the re-based GDP figures of 2013.

“I will like to leave you with a firm understanding that tremendous and massive opportunities abound in Nigeria’s movie industry for those interested from Trinidad and Tobago to tap into.

“These opportunities are, among others, in the form of contents that are both culturally relevant as well as a value – chain of entrepreneurial activities that are mutually beneficial”, she said.

Among those who spoke at the event were Mr. Waheed Olagunju, Executive Director, Business Development, Bank of Industry, Nigeria; Dr. Judith Aidoo, one time banker of the year in New York, Minister of Trade, Industry and Communications (Trinidad and Tobago) Vasant Barath and Al Washington, Director, Africa – USA International Chamber of Industry and Commence.

Earlier, Ms. Bala and her NFVCB delegation, made up of Cornel Agim (D/Ops), Tunde Hassan (SA), Philip Julson (Accountant) and Caesar .O. Kagho (Ag. Head, CA), had paid a courtesy call to the Nigerian High Commissioner, Trinidad and Tobago, where the Deputy Amb.O.K. Adebola received the delegation. During the visit, witnessed by top Diplomats of the Nigerian mission in Port of Spain, the Director – General emphasized the need to explore the possibilities of Nigerian distributors setting up business in Trinidad and Tobago.

She also told the mission about initiatives to re-invent contents of Nigerian movies to be more audience – friendly. Amb. Adebola however drew her attention to some areas of concern with regards to Nigerian movies which are quite popular in the Caribbean.

The Emancipation Celebration began in Trinidad and Tobago on 1st August 1985 to commemorate the day African slaves were officially freed in 1833 although the actual freedom came in 1838. The festival is a parade of African heritage (including foods, clothes artifacts, etc) from independence square to Queens Park in Port of Spain ending at Liji Yasu Omowale village (Queen’s Park Savanna). Also featured were Steel Pan Entertainment, Film show, Exhibition, live star performance by a Nigerian artiste Seun Kuti, National Steel Orchestra and Steel Band Procession.
