August 5, 2014 – Amnesty International has accused the Nigerian military of gruesome killings in violation of human rights in its ongoing war against the radical Islamic sect, Boko Haram that has killed and maimed thousands of Nigerians.
The agency said it has obtained gruesome footage of members of the military allegedly slitting the throats of detainees.
The footage were obtained from multiple sources on a trip to Borno state, in the north, adding that it “includes horrific images of detainees having their throats slit one by one and dumped in mass graves”, the BBC quoted Secretary General Amnesty International Salil Shetty as saying.
The perpetrators “appear to be members of the Nigerian military and the “Civilian Joint Task Force” (CJTF), state-sponsored militias,” the organisation adds.
“The ghastly images are backed up by the numerous testimonies we have gathered which suggest that extrajudicial executions are, in fact, regularly carried out by the Nigerian military and CJTF,” she said adding that the agency will investigate the alleged atrocities.
