LAGOS, Nigeria – Not less than three prisoners on death row have been executed by the Nigerian government in the last one year.




They were executed towards the end of 2016, Controller General of Prisons, Jaafaru Ahmed has said. He made the revelation while speaking on a programme on the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA.

He said the execution took place in Benin, Edo State and that the prison authority was able to carry out the execution because then Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole signed the death warrants.

Jaafaru Ahmed said only three states in the federation are have issues related to prison congestion. According to him, the states are Lagos, Enugu and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The Controller General added the issue of prison congestion will persist for long unless the Nigeria Prison Act is amended.

He said over 1000 prison inmtes sat for the West. African Examination Council, WAEC and that about 50 of them has five credits and above.
