May 15, 2015 – Staff of the National Identity Card Management Commission (NICMC) on Thursday protested in Lagos, calling on Director General of the commission, Mr. Chris Onyemenam not to carry out threat to sack over 1000 staff of the agency,

Bearing placards with messages such as ‘Sacking must stop in NIMC; N30 billion missing, DG NICMC Sacked 5,000, Plans to Sack Another 1,000; DG NICMC, Sack is not part of your duty, the protesters stormed the Lagos office chanting solidarity songs.

Speaking in behalf of the workers, Assistant Secretary General, National Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (NASCN), Mr. Joshua Apebo said that all offices of the agency are currently under lock and keys adding that the workers are angry that Onyemenam is only interested in sacking workers of the agency.

He said that it is not true that some workers are fraudulent and that the DG is wrong to allege that workers were sacked because of irregularities in documentation and fraud.

He said that some of the affected workers have put in up at least 34 to 35 years in service and that it is unfair to terminate their appointment on flimsy excuses.

According to him, the affected staff of the organisation have done verifications several times and such cannot be said to have fake papers.
