Gov Sanwo-Olu delivers on promise as first 180 traders get keys to world-class mega market

LAGOS – In a massive win for local commerce, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has handed over the first 180 provisional letters of allocation to traders at the newly redeveloped Alaba Transnational Market.
The move marks a huge milestone in turning the famous hub on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway into a 21st-century shopping powerhouse.
Traders gathered at the LASBCA headquarters in Ikeja on Wednesday to collect their letters personally, proving the Governor is a man of his word.
Dr. Olajide Babatunde, the Governor’s right-hand man for Urban Development, hailed the move as a key part of the THEMES+ agenda, designed to modernize the city’s economy.
”It is another beautiful day in Lagos where we are keeping all the promises,” Dr. Babatunde told the excited crowd. “We are developing 21 markets around Lagos, including Katangua and Jankara, to bring them up to international standards.”
The “New Alaba” isn’t just a facelift—it’s a total transformation. Once finished, the site will boast:
3,000 modern shops
World-class facilities
A brand-new access road to keep the goods moving
The government has also laid out a “fair play” payment plan to help locals get on the ladder. Traders who stump up a 25 per cent deposit get their letters immediately.
For those looking to save on interest, a 50 per cent down payment is the way to go, with the remaining balance spread over six months.
The state is even partnering with top banks to make sure the process is “seamless.”
Alhaji Mohammed Lajawa, Chairman of the Alaba Rago Market committee, couldn’t hide his delight as he thanked the Governor for fulfilling his pledge.
”The government has transformed Alaba Rago to meet international standards,” he said.
His only request? “Get that access road finished fast so we can get our goods through the doors!”
Dr. Babatunde had one final message for the new shop owners: Keep it clean and keep off the roadsides!
