NDUKA OBAIGBENA CLEARS SALARY ARREARS FOR THISDAY NEWSPAPER STAFF
IKEJA, Lagos – Publisher of Thisday Newspapers, Mr. Nduka Obaigbena has cleared all indebtedness to staff of the organisation. Chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalists, Lagos State Chapter, Dr. Qasim Olalere Akinreti made the revelation while briefing journalists at the monthly congress of NUJ held at Iyalla, Alausa, Lagos.
He said the publisher did not only clear all indebtedness to staff but has also commenced regular payment of salaries. It is not clear what would have been responsible for this development. But we gathered that Thisday newspaper is about the richest newspaper in Nigeria with weekly income from adverts and sales more than enough pay monthly salaries to staff.
The development however came as a big relief to staff who have htherto been disappointed by the attitude of the publisher. Congress also delibrated on state of the media with regards to dismisal of workers at The Sun Newspapers and Daar Communication. With regards to senior staff sacked at the Sun Newspapers, the congress informed the local chapel of the Sun to do a formal letter to the union informing it of the state of payment of gratuity to staff who have been dismissed.
With regards to Daar Communication, congress was informed that the sack is ongoing but could not ascertain total number of staff so far sacked but congress was told that those sacked are owed salary arears runining into 10 months.
