Residents say that gas pipeline belonging to the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC) is leaking, thus causing apprehension in the area.
A statement signed by Public Relations Officer of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye called the attention of the NGC to the incidents, stressing the need for the agency concerned to act in haste to prevent loss of lives.
“NEMA is urgently demanding prompt actions by the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC) to block the gas leakage at Ijoko area of Lagos-Abeokuta road along Abule-Egba, Lagos”, Farinloye said and warned residents to avoid acts that would lead to explosion due to the gas leakage in the area.
He added that NEMA has just been alerted about the incident by residents of the area. He said later on in another statement, that the area has been located and that it is in Ogun State and not Lagos as earlier reported.
NEMA explained that road construction work at Oluwaseun Street in Ijoko, coupled with excavation work caused leakage and consequent panic in the area. He said the NGC has halted supplies of gas to the area and that there is no longer threat to life and that the NGC has promised to fixed the affected part of the pipeline on Tuesday when work resumes.
