ABUJA, Nigeria – A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, today sentenced former governor of Taraba State, Mr. Jolly Nyame to 14 years for N1.6billion fraud. Nyame was charged to court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a 41 count charge of diverting N1.64 billion while he was governor of the state from 1999 and 2007.
The EFCC also accused Nyame of diverting various funds to the tune of N345 million to his company, Saman global, within five weeks in 2005. Nyame denied all the charges.
Justice Adebukola Bankole held that Nyame was guilty of 27 of the 41 charges against him. Nyame was convicted for receiving gratification and obtaining public funds without due consideration, and criminal breach of trust.
Nyame will serve 14 years in jail. He is expected to appeal the judgement.
