June 17, 2014 – Conference of Islamic Organisations (CIO), Lagos State Chapter on Tuesday described as undemocratic demands by groups in Lagos State that the next governor should be a Christian.

The group believes that the call “ is capable of polarising the state along religious line.

Addressing members of the body, the CIO leader, Sheik AbduRahman Ahmad and Chief Missioner, Ansar Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, said never in the history of Lagos State or any other state in the Southwest region has any governorship candidate been nominated or elected on religious ground.

Speaking through former President, Muslim Student Society of Nigeria, Lagos State chapter, Alhaji Qasim Badrudeen, noted that any attempt by any political party to foist any candidate on Lagos on the basis of religion will spell doom for such candidate at the poll.

Speaking on an attempt by a group in Osun State to launch an attack on a church disguising as members of the Boko Haram in Olaoluwa Local Government , the Sheikh argued that if the culprit had escaped, the attack would have been blamed on Muslims in the town (Ikonifin).

He alleged that Christian leaders within and outside the state have been making spirited efforts to truncate the case. “We reject the attempt by the so called Christian leaders to sweep this case under the carpet. We demand that Osun State Police Command thoroughly investigates the matter and arraign the suspects accordingly. We call on the Inspector General of Police to wade into the matter to ensure justice is done,” he said.

On the recurring Boko Haram menace in the northern part of the country, CIO noted that it appears that the campaign against the group is targeted at Islam and Muslims. Sheikh Ahmad said it is on record that the insurgents have killed more Muslims than non-Muslims since their emergence.
