A woman hiking across the mudflats of the Wadden Sea along Germany’s North Sea coast had to be rescued by helicopter on Saturday after being stranded on a sandbank and surrounded by water.
The woman became trapped by water north-west of the Westerheversand lighthouse near the seaside town of St. Peter Ording, according to the German Sea Rescue Society.
The helicopter used a winch to lift the woman to safety from the sandbank.
Sea rescue workers warned that hikes on the mudflats should only be undertaken when accompanied by knowledgeable mudflat guides.
