IKEJA, Lagos, Nigeria – A 30-year-old woman, Sheriff Ayo, who allegedly beat and used hot pressing iron to burn her daughter’s hands and legs, was on Monday arraigned in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court. Though the accused denied committing the offence, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs O. Sule Amzat, ordered that she be remanded in Kirikiri Prison, pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
She adjourned the case until May 23 for mention. Ayo, who resides at Sobodun Street, Orile-Iganmu, area of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of assault and assault occasioning harm. The prosecutor, Insp. Benson Emuerhi, said that the accused, after beating her daughter, one Sheriff Aishat, 16, mercilessly, she then burnt her upper and lower limbs with a hot pressing iron.
Emuerhi told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 24 at her residence in Lagos. According to him, the accused was, however, arrested by the Police following a tip-off they received from the Chosen child Orphanage (the complainant) that they should rescue the victim who was being abused by her mother.
He alleged that the accused beat her and burnt her with hot pressing iron, claiming she stole N250,00. The offences contravened Sections 172 and 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Section 172 of the Criminal Law prescribes two year jail term for such offence.
