DOHA – The colossal Lusail Stadium, home to one of the greatest nights in global football, played host to another dramatic climax last night as Morocco secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in the FIFA Arab Cup Group B decider.
The stunning Qatari venue—the futuristic arena destined to host the tournament’s grand final—provided a breathtaking backdrop for a tense affair that saw the Moroccans edge out their rivals by the narrowest of margins.
While the Green Falcons of Saudi Arabia had already booked their spot in the quarter-finals, Morocco needed a result to guarantee their progress, and they got it thanks to a clinical early strike from Karim El Berkaoui in the 11th minute.
The goal was all the Atlas Lions needed in the electric atmosphere of the magnificent Lusail Stadium.
The venue, which stands as a monumental symbol of Qatar’s footballing ambitions, witnessed a Moroccan side that showed tenacity and discipline to hold onto their slender lead.
Saudi Arabia dominated possession and pressed hard for an equaliser, but the turning point came midway through the second half.
The Moroccans held their breath as the referee pointed to the spot, but the Lusail pitch proved unlucky for the Green Falcons.
Abdullah Al Hamdan’s chipped penalty attempt soared over the crossbar, leaving the Saudi fans in the spectacular stadium crestfallen.
The miss was the last major chance for Saudi Arabia to break the deadlock at the World Cup Final venue.
Morocco saw out the rest of the game, sealing the 1-0 win that saw them top Group B and progress to the knockout stages.
The performance, while nervy, was a testament to their defensive steel on one of world football’s biggest stages.
The Lusail Stadium, an 80,000-seater powerhouse, will undoubtedly see more gripping action as the tournament progresses, but last night belonged to the Atlas Lions and their 1-0 triumph.
