NIAMEY – The military junta in Niger has issued a 72 hours ultimatum to officials of the United Nations to leave their country.

Niger’s Foreign Minister, Bakary Yaou Sangare said in a statement on Tuesday that the government had ordered Louise Aubin, the UN’s resident and humanitarian coordinator, “to take all necessary measures to leave Niamey within 72 hours”.

According to the statement, Niger took the decision following unfriendly stance of the UN since the military took over in Niger .

To be specific, the statement noted that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres thwarted the full and complete participation of Niger” at last month’s UN General Assembly.

It said “the perfidious actions” of the UN chief, were “likely to undermine any effort to end the crisis in our country”.

Bakary Yaou Sangare, who before the coup was Niger’s ambassador to the UN has been made foreign minister.
