MOSCOW, Russia – Famous Russian actor, Mikhail Efremov has been barred from driving for three years and sentenced to eight years in a penal colony by the Presnensky District Court.

He was convicted for driving under the influence of alcohol and killing Sergey Zakharov with his jeep in an accident on June 8, 2020. The court found that Mikhail Efremov killed Sergey Zakharov  while driving under the influence of alcohol.

Sergey Zakharov’s late son had in a suit filed by Zakharov’s widow, brother and son sought damages to the tune of 7.5 million rubles from Efremov. But the suit was dismissed by the court, which also recovered 800,000 rubles ($10,500) from actor Mikhail Efremov.

In his ruling,  Judge Elena Abramova said Efremov needed no compulsory psychiatric care and that the defendant pleaded guilty to charges and that he is not suffering from serious mental diseases.

The court said it also considered his guilty plea during the pretrial investigation and his three minor children as mitigating circumstances.

The prosecutor had demanded an 11-year imprisonment and driving ban for 3 years for Efremov. Recall that on the evening of June 8, Mikhail Efremov driving his car crossed into the oncoming lane in central Moscow and collided with a delivery service vehicle.

He was arrested on the scene. Alcohol and drugs were reportedly found in his blood stream. Sergey Zakharov was taken to hospital where he died early in the morning of June 9. That same day, Moscow’s Tagansky District Court ordered that Efremov be put under house arrest.
