FRENCH firebrand Marine Le Pen is facing a stretch behind bars after prosecutors today demanded a four-year prison sentence in her high-stakes appeal trial.
The 57-year-old National Rally leader is fighting for her political life in Paris, accused of masterminding a “systematic” plot to siphon millions from the European Union to fund her party back home.
In a move that could shatter her dreams of seizing the Presidency in 2027, state prosecutors asked judges to slap her with:
A four-year jail term (with three years suspended and one to be served under house arrest with an electronic tag).
A five-year ban from holding public office.
A €100,000 fine for the alleged embezzlement.
’Industrial Scale’ Plot
The court heard explosive claims that Le Pen was at the heart of an “industrial scale” scheme between 2004 and 2016.
Prosecutors allege she used EU taxpayer cash—meant for parliamentary assistants in Brussels—to pay party staff working on the ground in France.
Prosecutor Thierry Ramonatxo didn’t hold back, telling the court: “She signed the contracts.
She cannot claim she didn’t know. She was the one who set the rules.”
2027 Dreams in Doubt
Even if the blonde bombshell avoids a prison cell, the proposed five-year ban from public office is a “political death sentence.”
If upheld, the ban would legally bar her from standing in the 2027 presidential election, where she was tipped as a front-runner to replace Emmanuel Macron.
Outside the court, a defiant Le Pen slammed the move, having previously labeled the trial a “political execution.” While she admitted to “negligence” earlier in the trial, she maintains she did nothing criminal.
Background: The ‘Fake Jobs’ Scandal
The Original Verdict: In March 2025, a lower court found Le Pen guilty of embezzling roughly €3 million in EU funds.
She was originally handed a five-year ban and a four-year sentence.
The ‘System’: Prosecutors claim the National Rally (then the National Front) used the European Parliament as a “cash cow” to pay for domestic party operations.
The Protege: If Le Pen is ultimately barred from the 2027 race, her 30-year-old protégé Jordan Bardella is widely expected to step in as the party’s candidate.
What’s Next? The appeal verdict is expected before the summer. If convicted again, Le Pen could take her case to France’s highest court, the Cour de Cassation, in a final roll of the dice.
