KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Elected Prime Minister of Malaysia, Mr. Mahathir Mohamad of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party been sworn in as World’s Oldest Prime Minister. Mohamad, a member of the opposition defeated the incumbent, Najib Razak of the ruling, United Malaysian National Organisation.
Mahathir, (92) was sworn in on Thursday night by Malaysia’s constitutional ruler, King Muhammad V. The defeat saw Mahathir who ruled the country from 1981 until 2003 return to power for the second time. His was alleged to have driven into the King’s palace and left thereafter, raising fears that the King was against his emergence.
But in a press statement issued on Thursday night, the palace said it had invited Mahathir to form a government and “strongly” denied the king had delayed the appointment.
“His Majesty the King strongly supports and respects the democratic process,” the statement said.
