MAKURDI — Disaster was narrowly averted on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, after a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) helicopter carried out an emergency landing on farmland in the outskirts of Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

This is taking place less than 48 hours after NAF aircraft crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State, killing all 32 people on board.

However, all military personnel and passengers on board survived the incident without fatalities, following what eyewitnesses described as a swift response by the flight crew to manage a sudden technical malfunction in transit.

The incident occurred in the Utur Tse-Igboji community, located along the Welfare Quarters to Mopol 13 Ring Road axis in the Bar Council Ward of Makurdi.
Local residents who witnessed the aircraft descending unexpectedly rushed to the site to assist the crew.

”By the grace of God, all lives on board were saved when the helicopter landed on our farmland due to a technical fault,” said Stephen Ikpam, an eyewitness at the scene.

“We all rushed to the scene to support the officers on board, and they all came out alive. It would have been a massive tragedy if the helicopter had crashed.”

Community members expressed relief as security personnel secured the area following the landing to evaluate the aircraft and ascertain the immediate cause of the technical fault.

Makurdi serves as a strategic hub for the Nigerian Air Force, housing the Tactical Air Command (TAC) and the 101 Air Combat Training Group.

NAF platforms frequently conduct routine operational sorties, reconnaissance missions, and tactical training flights across the North-Central region to support ongoing counter-banditry and internal security operations.

While military aviation operations inherently carry technical risks, the Nigerian Air Force maintains strict maintenance schedules and emergency response protocols.

Emergency precautionary landings are standard safety procedures implemented by pilots when onboard diagnostic systems detect technical anomalies mid-flight, aimed at preventing catastrophic crashes and protecting both crew and ground populations.

Military authorities are expected to conduct a routine technical assessment of the aircraft to determine the exact nature of the fault before recovery operations commence.
