WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has declared that while economic, political, and institutional reforms are vital for Nigeria’s survival, the nation’s most urgent and foundational fix remains the complete reform of its leadership.
Obi made this assertion while addressing a gathering of young Nigerian professionals in Washington, D.C., comprising medical doctors, healthcare practitioners, educators, lawyers, engineers, technology experts,
entrepreneurs, and business leaders.
Describing the interactive session as both engaging and deeply encouraging, Obi emphasized that no nation can ever rise above the character, competence, capacity, and commitment of the individuals entrusted with steering its affairs.
Highlighting the stark contrast between Nigeria’s immense potential and its current developmental challenges, Obi noted that the country is by no means deficient in human or natural capital.
”We are not lacking in intelligent people. We are not lacking in natural resources. We are not lacking in hardworking and innovative young people. What we have lacked for far too long is leadership that genuinely puts the people first and treats public resources as a sacred trust,” Obi stated.
He stressed that Nigeria desperately requires a leadership architecture that actively strengthens public institutions, invests heavily in education and healthcare, nurtures business growth, creates sustainable jobs, and restores the hope of the common citizen that hard work genuinely pays off.
Reflecting on the caliber of Nigerians making waves globally across medicine, technology, engineering, and commerce, Obi maintained that the diaspora community remains a vital asset in the country’s quest for redemption.
He argued that the diaspora should never be viewed merely as people who have abandoned their homeland, but as critical stakeholders whose expertise and investments are urgently needed back home.
”We must build a Nigeria where our young people do not have to leave their country in order to fulfil their dreams, and where those already abroad can confidently return, invest, contribute, and participate in our national development,” he affirmed.
Concluding his address, Obi expressed absolute optimism that a thriving, functional Nigeria is entirely achievable, provided there is collective resolve among citizens who refuse to give up.
He called on Nigerians both at home and abroad to sustain their faith, maintain their industrious work ethic, and continually demand a system that works for everyone, ending with his signature rallying cry: “A New Nigeria is POssible.”
