PARIS — Far-right leader Marine Le Pen called for a complete halt to French financial aid to Ukraine, arguing that France’s mounting domestic budget deficit and weak economic growth mean the country can no longer afford to fund Kyiv’s military and state operations.
Speaking to reporters in Brussels, Ms. Le Pen said it was a “matter of honesty” to inform Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy immediately that French financial support cannot continue indefinitely.
“Rather than leading him to believe we could continue to fund Ukraine indefinitely, the honest thing to do with Mr. Zelenskyy is to tell him—to warn him, in fact—that listen, we can’t do more, we can’t manage more,” Ms. Le Pen said, describing France’s current budget crisis as an “extremely perilous situation”.
Ms. Le Pen, who is positioning herself as a frontrunner for France’s next presidential election, specified that while she supports maintaining military training and certain operational support for Ukrainian forces, financial disbursements and broader European Union loan contributions must be curtailed. She also signaled plans to oppose key elements of the EU’s multi-year budget framework that reserve funding for Kyiv.
Ms. Le Pen’s remarks come at a critical juncture for both French domestic policy and European security strategy:
French Fiscal Pressures: France is grappling with significant public debt and a deficit exceeding European Union target thresholds, triggering widespread calls across Parliament for public spending cuts.
Electoral Positioning: Ms. Le Pen’s National Rally party has consistently built momentum by contrasting aid allocations to foreign conflicts against domestic cost-of-living challenges, health system funding, and public service strain.
Impact on Broader EU Strategy:
As the euro zone’s second-biggest economy, France plays a pivotal role in backing European Union financing packages for Ukraine. Opposition from a leading French presidential candidate threatens to complicate consensus on long-term EU budgetary aid and Ukraine’s eventual accession path.
