September 12, 2014 – The stage is now set for the enthronement of illegality in local government administration in Lagos State as tenure of the 57 local government chairmen expires in October, 2014.

So there is nothing to suggest that election would hold before then. We gathered that there is a current jostle between the 57 chairmen and the vice who are said to be favoured by the party to administer the local government pending when elections will hold.

But sources say that the chairmen are currently lobbying top party officials with millions of Naira to ensure that they remain in charge even when their tenure has expired.

Attempt to elongate tenure of the chairmen by the Lagos State House of Assembly(LAHA) in 2013 through the Local Government Amendment Bill 2013 met a brick wall when members of the civil society kicked against the proposal which was under debate at that time.

The Bill according to Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Ademurin Kuye was to bring the tenure of LG chairmen to four years and at par with that of the Executive Governor of the state.

Kuye also promised that there would be a public hearing on the Bill but till date nothing has been heard about it.

Speaking with The Union Newspaper on phone, House Committee Chairman on Information Hon. Segun Olulade said the LAHA is on recess adding that the House is yet to make any arrangement with regards to expiration of the tenure of LG chairmen in the state not to talk of elections.
He however promised to get across to the reporter when the house resumes.

Our investigation at the office of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) however revealed that there is nothing on ground to suggest that there will be any election between now and October when tenure of LG chairmen will expire.

Nobody is however ready to speak on preparedness of LASIEC to conduct elections into the Local Governments based on the sensitive nature of the issue at stake.
