Commissioner for Transportation, Lagos State, Comrade Kayode Opeifa on Friday said the state government has registered about 19,372 vehicles through the ongoing accreditation of commercial vehicles in the State in continuation of the implementation of the second phase of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law 2012.

The commissioner, who revealed this in Lagos, reiterated that the accreditation process is line with the determination of the State Government to ensure that Lagosians have a safe, reliable and efficient public transportation system.

He explained that the breakdown of the 19, 372 commercial vehicles registered include 1, 645 vehicles as Car Hire Service “kabukabu”; 394 vehicles as Mass Transit; 10, 373 vehicles as mini buses (Danfo); 6,381 vehicles as yellow taxis and 579 tricycles (KEKE MARWA).

Opeifa lamented that in spite of the huge number of commercial vehicles in the State estimated as being over 35,000, only 19, 372 had registered indicating that most public transport owners and operators are not complying with the State Government’s directive.

Speaking on the accreditation of drivers and conductors, the commissioner said that less than 13, 000 out of the estimated 50, 000 had attended the Lagos State Drivers Institute (LASDRI) for accreditation as at Wednesday, 26th February, 2014.

While advising drivers and conductors who are yet to attend the Lagos State Drivers Institute (LASDRI) to immediately go to any of the five designated centres in their own interest, he enjoined commercial passenger vehicle owners to also go with their vehicles to any of the 21 Vehicle Inspection Service offices spread across the State for their documentation.

He reminded those who are yet to register that when the new policy eventually takes effect, any owner, driver or conductor who refused to register will not be issued with a license in line with Regulation 41 of the Lagos Road Traffic Law and will also miss out on the various opportunities and benefits that the government intends to make available to owners, drivers and conductors.
