LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Government has announced a comprehensive reconstruction and upgrade of the decades-old Randle General Hospital in Surulere, transforming the historic facility into a four-floor ultramodern healthcare centre.
The ambitious project, partly sponsored by the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, is set to deliver international-standard medical services to the densely populated area.
The announcement was made on Monday at a community engagement session, where officials unveiled plans to replace the hospital’s aging structure, which health authorities say has exceeded its useful lifespan.
The new facility will be equipped with advanced diagnostic tools, including CT scan and MRI machines, along with dedicated accident and emergency services, surgical theatres, modern laboratories, and improved patient wards.
Dr. (Mrs.) Kemi Ogunyemi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, stressed that the project is “a total transformation, not just a renovation,” aimed at restoring Randle’s status as a premier secondary healthcare centre.
”Our people deserve facilities that meet international standards, and that is what this project will deliver,” Dr. Ogunyemi stated. She noted that the new design focuses on enhancing patient dignity, ensuring faster service delivery, and improving staff working conditions.
The Special Adviser specifically commended Gbajabiamila, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, for his financial backing, calling it a demonstration of his commitment to Universal Health Coverage.
“From donating the Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital to funding this new Randle project, his contributions reflect an unwavering dedication to the well-being of his people,” she added.
A key concern addressed during the session was the continuation of medical services for Surulere residents. Dr. Ogunyemi assured the community that services would be seamlessly relocated to the Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital and the MCC Gbaja during the construction phase.
”Nobody will be left without care. This interim arrangement ensures that Surulere continues to receive essential services without interruption,” she explained.
Dr. Ibrahim Mustafa, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, appealed to residents for their cooperation, emphasizing that the temporary relocation is a necessary “sacrifice for long-term benefit.” He hailed the reconstruction as a defining moment for the community and an “investment in health and in the future.”
The new structure, according to Dr. Olusoga Oduwole, Director of the Medical Project Implementation Unit, is designed to provide a “patient-centred experience with international-standard facilities,” featuring a mix of consultation rooms, specialized wards, and modern hospital furniture.
Officials emphasized that the project aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda for strengthening health systems. Community leaders, including the Medical Director of Randle General Hospital, Dr. Olumide Sojinrin, expressed strong support, pledging cooperation to ensure the smooth execution of the redevelopment, which they hope will keep Randle relevant for future generations.
