Lagos State Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise for the month of March will be observed across the State between the hours of 7:00am-10am, on Saturday 29th March, 2014.

According to Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello, human and vehicular movement will be restricted for the three hours duration to allow for full participation of Lagos residents in the exercise.

“The totality of our efforts are now concentrated in our goal towards attaining a flood free Lagos during the coming rainy season”, while not relenting on our core environmental management functions. Our goal is to sustain the achievements of last year as well as try to surpass it’, he said.

Tunji reminded residents of the state that global climatic weather conditions has become so unpredictable, as the flooding ravaging some parts of the United Kingdom, with their advanced drainage network can also happen in Lagos adding that this explains the reasons for preparation.

“We must ensure that our drains and channels are free flowing, as well as properly dispose our waste through LAWMA and authorized PSP operators, as dumping of waste into canals impede the flow of storm water in our drainage channels”, he said.

Tunji warned residents who still patronize cart pushers to desist from this illegal act, however advised Lagosians to complement the State Government’s effort towards ensuring that our canals and channels are cleaned at all times, by desisting from dumping into them in order to attain a flood free Lagos.

To ensure full participation as well as total compliance to the restriction order, Mr. Tunji Bello warned interstate Bus Operators, the State Transport Owners and Road Transport Workers Association to comply with the restriction of vehicular movement order between 7.00am-10.00am as any vehicle caught violating this order would be dealt with appropriately, while passengers in such vehicles would also be prosecuted according to the State Sanitation Laws.

He further assured that Law Enforcement Agencies including Nigerian Police and officials from LAWMA, LASTMA and KAI had been fully mobilized to enforce the restriction of movement order adding that violators would be prosecuted according to the State Sanitation Laws.
