April 22, 2015 – Not less than 191 buildings have been earmarked by the Lagos State Government for demolition. General Manager, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Dr. Abimbola Animashaun Odunayo, made the revelation while speaking at a press conference in Lagos.
She did not give the exact locations of the affected buildings but said that they were defective adding that in the year 2014 a total of 41 defective buildings were demolished and that it is about 21 percent of the structures approved for demolition in the state.
Odunayo said site inspection and stage certification are part of the key functions of the agency adding that initial inspection is carried out by the agency at inception of construction while stage inspection and certification is done at the completion of each stage of a building construction by the inspectorate division of the agency.
She said the number developers applying for stage inspection and certification of their buildings has increased due to ongoing monitoring activities and public awareness of the services and benefit to the developer.
She said the agency has successfully created several offices, spread around Lagos state for efficient monitoring of the 57 local councils adding that the initial six divisions have been expanded to 20 district offices and 57 zonal offices for effective and easy monitoring.
She said his agency has embarked on massive enlightenment campaign to ensure that professionals are engaged in building construction.
