KURDISH leaders have slammed “malicious” claims they are helping to launch a secret land invasion of Iran.
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) issued a blistering denial following reports that they were arming opposition groups to sneak across the border and spark a new front in the Middle East conflict.
Spokesman Peshawa Hawramani blasted the allegations as “completely unfounded” and “cowardly.”
In a direct message to the international community, Mr. Hawramani insisted the region is not interested in seeing the current war expand.
He said: “The Kurdistan Regional Government and the political parties within it are not part of any campaign to expand the war and tensions in the region.
”On the contrary, we call for peace and stability.”
The denial comes as the region faces its own crisis, with drone and missile strikes regularly hitting Kurdish soil.
Describing the recent barrages as “cowardly attacks,” the KRG has now called on the Iraqi federal government and world leaders to step in.
”We call on the international community to intervene to stop these assaults and protect our land, our people, and our region,” Mr. Hawramani added.
The KRG remains adamant that the reports were published “deliberately” to destabilise the area.
Background: A Region on the Brink
The Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRG) has long been a key Western ally but finds itself trapped in a dangerous geopolitical vice.
The Allegations: Recent reports suggested that the U.S. and Israel might be using Kurdish territory as a springboard to arm Iranian-Kurdish opposition groups. These groups, such as the PDKI, have long-standing grievances with the regime in Tehran.
The Reality on the Ground: In the last 48 hours, Iranian-backed militias have stepped up drone strikes on Erbil, targeting both Kurdish bases and areas near U.S. diplomatic buildings.
The Stakes: For the Kurds, being seen as a “launchpad” for an invasion is a death sentence for their stability. Tehran has previously warned it will show “no mercy” to any neighbour hosting “terrorist” elements, making the KRG’s denial a vital move to prevent a full-scale Iranian incursion into northern Iraq.
