ILORIN, Kwara, Nigeria – The key suspect in the notorious Offa banks robbery is dead. The prime suspect, Michael Adikwu was said to have died in police custody. Adikwu was charged to court with five others Ayoade Akinnibosun, Ibikunle Ogunleye, Adeola Abraham, Salaudeen Azeez and Niyi Ogundiran.
At the hearing today before a Kwara State High Court, the prosecutor, Kwara State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Kamaldeen Ajibade(SAN) told the court that the suspect died in custody.
Ajibade told journalists that he was informed about the death of the suspect on the way to court.
However the matter could not proceed since the other suspects could not have access to their counsel. One of the suspects told the court that they were only told on Monday that they will be in court today but that since Tuesday was public holiday, they could not get across to their lawyer.
The matter has been adjourned till Friday for hearing.
At least 50 people were killed when a gang of armed robbers stormed five banks in April, 2018. The affected banks are Union Bank, Ecobank, Guaranty Trust Bank, First Bank, Zenith Bank and Ibolo Micro Finance Bank.
However, Commissioner of police, Mr. Lawan Ado, however, said 17 people, including nine police officers and eight civilians were killed when the robbers attacked.
