ABUJA, Nigeria – The controversial reign of Mr. Julius Abure as Chairman of the Labour Party(LP) has come to an end after a prolonged legal battle, following the pronouncement by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
A five-man panel of the Supreme Court today vacated the January 17 judgment of Court of Appeal in Abuja, which validated Abure’s continued stay in office as National Chairman of the party.
According to the five man panel, the appellate court lacked the jurisdiction to enter any pronouncement in favour of Abure since it had earlier found that the subject matter of the dispute bordered on the leadership of a political party.
The court ruled that the substance of the case centered on the domestic affair of a political party which no court has the powers to adjudicate on.
With the judgment, control of the party now falls into the hands of former Minister of Finance, Senator Esther Nenadi Usman and Hon. Darlington Nwokocha, who operate as Chairman and Secretary, respectively, of a Caretaker Committee appointed to pilot the affairs of the Labour Party.
