Condemns judges for sending out journalists from courts

LAGOS, Nigeria – Practicing journalists in Nigeria have been called upon to embrace online journalism as a means to empower themselves and become self-reliant. Chairman, National Association of Judicial Correspondents(NAJUC) Lagos, Mr. Peter Fowoyo gave the advice while speaking at the annual lecture of the association titled, “Press freedom in the new social media age: implications and the law”.

He explained that online journalism has presented an opportunity for journalists to be self employed and contribute their quota to the development of the society.

He alluded to the challenges confronting journalism as a practice, which include delay in payment of salaries and journalists beaten up by security agencies in the practice of their profession.

He noted that while the constitution guarantees freedom of the press and recognised the media as the 4th estate of the realm he wonders how journalists can peform their role in situation where journalists are increasingly being sent out of courts by judges during court procedings.

He also queried the rational for the Nigerian Union of Journalists(NUJ) for proscribing beat associations when such associations were created to cater fo the welfare of journalists.

According to him, NAJUC has played pivotal role in the welfare of members by rendering assistant to them during childbirth, when bereaved, during wedding ceremonies and when they are sick.
