HONG KONG – The Chief Secretary for Administration (CSA) of Hong Kong, John Lee has been elected as the new leader to succeed Carrie Lam.
John Lee, 64, has been CSA since 2021. He was elected in an executive election composed of 1000 executive delegates, vetted by authorities in Beijing.
Lee who was educated at the Wah Yan College, Kowloon was the only candidate in the executive election.
Lee was among other senior Hong Kong and Chinese officials sanctioned by the United States in 2020 for what Washington described as their role in curbing Hong Kong’s freedoms under a sweeping national security law imposed on the city by Beijing.
“Last year, as Hong Kong’s security chief, Lee sent letters to media tycoon Jimmy Lai and branches of HSBC and Citibank threatening up to seven years’ jail for any dealings with the billionaire’s accounts in the city”, Reuters reported.
Speaking after the election, he said having restored order from chaos, it is hight time Beijing begins development and commit to new work culture. He vows to unite the people. He takes office July 1.
