JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA – The dazzling King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, affectionately nicknamed ‘The Jewel’ (Al-Jawhara), played host to another Saudi Pro League spectacle on Thursday as giants Al Ittihad battled to a tense 2-1 victory over Al Riyadh.
In a match held within the spectacular 62,345-capacity arena—a stunning architectural landmark that is the second largest in the Kingdom—it was the home team that capitalised early, pleasing the vast Jeddah crowd.
Superstar striker Karim Benzema delivered the opener in the 24th minute, showcasing his world-class finishing to put the Tigers ahead. Just before the break, Ittihad doubled their advantage when Al Khaibari slotted home in the 42nd minute.
The home side seemed comfortable in the gleaming, modern theatre of football, but Al Riyadh refused to let the occasion—or the venue’s reputation—overwhelm them.
They launched a late fightback, finding a lifeline in the 77th minute courtesy of a determined strike from Sylla.
However, the magnificent setting of The Jewel remained a happy hunting ground for Al Ittihad, whose defence held firm for the remaining minutes to secure the crucial 2-1 win and take all three points in their magnificent Jeddah fortress.
