JERUSALEM — ISRAEL is preparing to “taper off” its reliance on billions of dollars in American military aid, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has revealed.
In a bombshell interview with The Economist, the Israeli leader declared that his country’s economy has finally “come of age” and is ready to stand on its own two feet.
Netanyahu predicted that Israel’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is on a rocket-path to hit the staggering $1 trillion mark—a milestone that would cement its status as a global economic powerhouse.
‘Incredible Capacities’
The Prime Minister signaled a historic shift in the “special relationship” between Washington and Jerusalem, suggesting the 10-year phase-out would reflect Israel’s new-found strength.
”We have developed incredible capacities,” Netanyahu said, pointing to the nation’s booming tech sector and defense innovations.
For decades, the US has provided Israel with a massive military safety net, currently worth roughly $3.8 billion (£3 billion) a year.
But Netanyahu believes the “Start-Up Nation” no longer needs to be treated like a junior partner.
