Jean-Claude Duvalier, Ousted Haitian Leader Dies at 63

October 4, 2014 – Former ruler of Haiti, Mr. Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier is dead. He was 63. He died of heart attack in the capital Port-au-Prince.

Duvalier ruled Haiti for 15 years after inheriting the throne from his father, ‘Papa Doc’ Duvalier in 1971. He was just 17. He was the youngest President at the time of his swearing in.

He left the throne in unceremonious circumstances in 1986. His regime is characterized by corruption, human rights abuse and repression, which led to an uprising in 1986.

He went into exile in France only to return to Haiti in 2011.Former Haiti Attorney General , Reynold Georges confirmed he died at home on Saturday.

Jean-Claude Duvalier lived lavishly. At the time he got married, his state-sponsored wedding reportedly cost $5m in 1980, even when his subjects are neck deep in poverty.

Human rights groups say thousands of political prisoners were either tortured or killed under his rule, and he was accused of massive corruption.
